Cancer Diagnosis and Self-Identity

Self-identity is how we perceive ourselves.  Our relationships, careers, hobbies, and even our physical appearance can shape who we are.  Receiving a cancer diagnosis can unexpectedly reshape that perception.  From possible physical changes to practical day-to-day changes, it’s understandable that we can become overwhelmed.  We can begin to see ourselves solely through the cancer diagnosis and no longer in our “full identity”.

Although these changes may be temporary, we often find it difficult to visualize returning to what we define as “normalcy”.  During this time, it is important to focus on the present even if it may look different.  As you move through the diagnosis and treatment process, remember to take one step at a time.  Consider how you feel both physically and emotionally each day as it may fluctuate.  Strive to stay in the present as it is easy to go to the “what ifs”, provide self-compassion, and participate in self-care.  Give yourself permission to have joyful moments, to laugh, and smile.  Remember you are you no matter what you are going through!

Helpful Tips:

– Start and end your day by practicing deep breathing:

4-4-6 Method

1. Sit in a comfortable position, allowing yourself to relax

2. Breathe slowly through your nose for 4 seconds

3. Pause, hold the air in for 4 seconds

4. Exhale, breathe out slowly through your mouth for 6 seconds

You can place your hand on your stomach to feel it rising as you breathe in.

–  Allow yourself to continue physical activity as tolerated, don’t get stuck in “pajama paralysis”.

–  Stay connected and engage in conversation with others.

–  Take part in distracting activities: read, write, draw, make a puzzle, etc.
