Breast Cancer Awareness & Resources

A breast cancer diagnosis can be life-changing for those who receive a diagnosis. Breast cancer does not discriminate against age, gender, or race, acting as the number one cancer to affect women. Those who are diagnosed with breast cancer, like those diagnosed with other cancers will need a solid support system to guide them through their journey. At Ironwood Cancer and Research Centers, we provide a solid foundation of supports for our patients, including those affected by breast cancer. In addition to our services, we have gathered some helpful resources for those undergoing breast cancer treatment.

A Medicaid Plan for You

The Breast and Cervical Cancer Treatment Plan is a plan that is a component of Arizona Medicaid but, only patients that have a confirmed diagnosis of Breast or Cervical Cancer and who meet financial criteria qualify for it. Patients who have lost their insurance coverage through their employer or are no longer able to afford insurance premium payments can reach out to our Supportive Care Services department to see if they meet the financial requirements.

Breast Cancer Awareness & ResourcesNeed Assistance Finding for a Wig?

There are a couple of items you need to know if you are a patient who is going through treatment and looking for a wig. First, if you have medical insurance, the policy may cover all or a portion of your wig cost. The insurance knows a wig to be, in medical terms, a cranial prosthesis.

To visit one of the community boutiques for a wig, you will need an order from your oncologist to obtain a “cranial prosthesis.” The Supportive Care Services department can provide you with a list of local wig boutiques near you to then go visit and select a wig that you feel the most comfortable in.

If your insurance policy does not cover wigs there is a program called, Don’t Be a Chump! Check for a Lump! allows breast cancer patients to complete an application for assistance with the cost of a wig from a boutique in the valley.

Support Groups for You!

Our Supportive Care Services offers two separate Breast Cancer Support Groups at this time, for those seeking support from other patients who are newly diagnosed, in the middle of treatment, or nearing the end of their treatment. Both support groups are offered in a virtual platform due to COVID-19 restrictions. The first group is live on the first Wednesday of each month from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm. The second goes live the 2nd Saturday of each month from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm. For additional information and to obtain links for each group, please email socialwork@ironwoodcrc.com.
