Nutrition plays a key role during cancer treatment. Eating well before, during, and after treatment can help maintain strength and aid in feeling better overall. However, cancer and its treatments can sometimes lead to challenges that make eating difficult. While not everyone experiences nutrition-related side effects, being informed can help you manage them effectively if they arise.

Maintaining a healthy diet during cancer treatment can support your body in many ways. It helps prevent the breakdown of body tissues and promotes the growth of new ones. People who eat well often tolerate treatment side effects better and may even be able to handle higher doses of certain medications. In fact, some cancer treatments are more effective in individuals who are well-nourished and getting enough calories and protein.

Here are some helpful tips to support your nutrition:

Be open to trying new foods. Your taste preferences may change during treatment, and foods you didn’t enjoy before might now appeal to you.

Incorporate more plant-based meals. Try replacing meat with beans or peas in a few meals each week.

Eat a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables daily. These foods are rich in natural compounds that support health.

Aim to maintain a healthy weight and stay active. Small weight changes are normal during treatment, but staying active can help you feel better.

Limit red and processed meats, sugary drinks, and highly processed foods.

If you’re not able to follow these nutrition tips right now, that’s completely understandable. Everyone’s experience with cancer treatment is different. If you’re having trouble eating or meeting your nutritional needs, talk to your cancer care team. They can connect you with a registered dietitian who can help you adjust your diet to ensure you’re getting the fluids, protein, and calories your body needs.

At Ironwood Cancer & Research Centers, our Supportive Care Services include access to experienced dietitians who are here to help. If you’d like support with your nutrition, please ask your physician for a referral.
