Breast cancer is a disease in which cells in the breast grow out of control. Breast cancer cells usually form a tumor that can often be seen on an x-ray or felt as a lump. Breast cancer occurs almost entirely in women, but men can get breast cancer, too. Types of breast cancer include ductal carcinoma in situ, invasive ductal carcinoma, inflammatory breast cancer, and metastatic (also know as Stage 4) breast cancer.
Oncoplastic breast surgery combines plastic surgery techniques with a surgical oncology mindset to resect the breast lesion and reconstruct the lumpectomy or mastectomy defect. We are taking into consideration a patient’s disease, wishes and expectations, anatomic features, oncologic safety, and preservation of both form and function.
Every patient evaluated for therapeutic breast surgery should be considered an oncoplastic patient, with care taken to devise a surgical plan that avoids disfigurement.
