National Nurses Day
“Save one life and you are a hero. Save a hundred lives and you are a nurse.”
May 6th is National Nurses Day and we at Ironwood would like to take a moment to recognize all of the hard work and dedication we have seen from our nurses, especially over the past year with all of its challenges.
It is impossible to express all of our gratitude in words but we are so thankful for your essential role at Ironwood. Your passion for helping others, kindness towards all, and knowledge of your work are limitless. Our patients are better because of the amazing care you provide. Thank you!
This day to celebrate our nurses kicks off Nurses week, which ends on May 12th, the birthdate of Florence Nightingale, the very first nurse. Ms. Nightingale an English nurse is the founder of professional nursing due to her pioneering work during the mid-1800s. She had a habit of making rounds at night to her patients carrying a lamp. This is how she became known as “The Lady with the Lamp.”

Elizabeth Blackwell was the first American woman to graduate from medical school and in 1861 founded a medical school for women. Clara Barton, the founder of the American Red Cross is considered the patron saint of the American Nursing profession.
In 1953, Dorothy Sutherland of the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare asked President Eisenhower to declare a national nursing celebration for the following year with absolutely no success. It was not until 1974 that nurses received this recognition from President Nixon.
Please take a moment to say thank you to our nurses when you see them, especially during National Nurses Week this month. Our celebration begins May 6th and wraps up on May 12th.
